The Quarry Zone

The Quarry Zone is a distinct heavy industrial district located southwest of downtown Waterville. Encompassing a massive limestone mining operation with deep historical roots, this site provided the stone used to fill the former canal bed that became the Anthony Wayne Trail. Today, owned and operated by Heidelberg Materials, the quarry serves as a critical regional resource for construction aggregates. The area is zoned M-2 (General Industrial), reflecting its intensive land use and long-term role in the local economy.

Strategic Initiatives

Operational Compatibility & Buffering

While the quarry is a vital economic asset, its operations (blasting, crushing, and transport) require careful management to coexist with the community. Our strategy focuses on strict buffer zones and environmental mitigation. Future development in adjacent areas is restricted to non-sensitive uses to prevent conflict, ensuring that residential neighborhoods and schools are shielded from vibration, noise, and dust emissions associated with active mining.

Long-Term Resource Management

The quarry operates under M-2 Industrial zoning, the city’s most intensive land-use classification. The City coordinates with operators to ensure that heavy truck traffic is managed efficiently, minimizing impact on local roads. While the site is currently dedicated to resource extraction, long-range planning considers the eventual reclamation and repurposing of this massive site once mining operations cease, ensuring it remains a sustainable asset for future generations.
